Questions and answers
Frequently asked questions
We’re developing the pilot now, and these answers explain the plan for free tactile photographs, requests, privacy, and support.
Is the service free?
Yes. Our plan is to make accepted tactile photographs and standard shipping free to qualifying recipients. Program eligibility and geographic availability will be clearly explained when requests open.
When can I request a photo?
We plan to open free requests after the pilot is ready. We’re preparing prototypes, secure intake, accessibility testing, and fulfillment so the process is ready to support recipients well.
Who can request a tactile photograph?
We are designing the service for people who are blind or have low vision. Trusted helpers may also be able to request on a recipient’s behalf with permission.
Can I submit a picture for someone else?
Yes, the planned process includes help from a trusted family member, friend, or support person where the recipient agrees. Consent and privacy will be built into the request flow.
What kinds of photographs work best?
Pictures with a distinct main subject are a strong starting point. Clear outlines, recognizable shapes, and a meaningful focal point can translate especially well into a tactile surface.
Is a tactile photo the same as a Braille image?
They serve different purposes. A tactile relief uses raised outlines, surfaces, or shapes to communicate the subject of a photograph, while Braille is a system of raised dots for reading text. Descriptions may accompany the print.
Will the print feel exactly like the photograph looks?
A tactile photograph is a touch-based interpretation of the image. We plan to emphasize the shapes and features that best communicate the subject through the hands.
Can I request a particular print size or material?
We’re testing formats, sizes, materials, and customization options now. We’ll publish the available choices and any handling guidance as the pilot develops.
Will you share my photograph or story online?
Sharing will always be optional and permission-based. Personal submissions are planned to remain private to the fulfillment process unless a recipient separately chooses to share their story.
What happens to the original photograph after printing?
We’re designing a secure storage, access, retention, and deletion process. The exact policy and choices will be published before uploads begin.
How long will delivery take?
We’ll publish realistic delivery estimates after the pilot establishes the design, printing, and shipping time for a typical request.
Can I donate or become a partner?
Yes. Our GoFundMe fundraiser is live, and organizations, makers, accessibility specialists, and other supporters can also explore partnership opportunities.
